St George Illawarra Dragons 42-10 Penrith Panthers

Gareth Widdop contract

England international Gareth Widdop put in arguably his best performance for St George as they kicked off the season with a 42-10 rout of Penrith.

Widdop has often been at the heart of criticism in a faltering Dragons attack, but the half-back was in fine form scoring two and creating three in the big win.

Tipped by many this season, the young Panthers were overpowered by the Red V with Joel Thompson turning back the clock with a hat-trick of tries.

His first two came inside 25 minutes, almost identical to each other, as he crashed onto short passes, first from debutant Cameron McInnes and then Widdop.

Waqa Blake got one back for Penrith, sensationally finishing after great play by Te Maire Martin but the joy was short lived, Jack de Belin beating several defenders to score a fine try.

With a 18-4 lead, any thoughts of a second-half slowdown were put to bed after five minutes when Widdop touched down following a great kick from Josh McCrone.

Tyrone Peachey’s try gave the Panthers a glimmer of hope, which was again short lived, McInnes finishing off some scintillating work from Josh Dugan to make it 30-10.

Widdop had his second try when Jason Nightingale scooped up a loose ball and offloaded to his skipper, who dummied over and put the game to bed on the hour.

There was still time for one more highlight, Man of the Match Widdop sliced through to put Thompson over for his hat-trick and round off a fine performance by St George Illawarra.

It was a great day for the Dragons and in particular Widdop, whose final conversion saw him equal the club-record 22 points in a single game.
