Sheffield Eagles 32-20 London Broncos

Sheffield Eagles secured their third victory of the Championship season with a 32-20 victory over London Broncos at Beaumont Legal Stadium. Elliot Minchella and Simon Brown starred for the Eagles in the halves, the former scoring two tries while the latter had an exceptional performance with the boot. A second half fightback from London was halted as Sheffield kept hold of their lead and registered their second win on the spin.

The opening try of the contest went the way of the visitors and their second-rower Jay Pitts who touched down on the last tackle. Jarrod Sammut couldn’t convert. In response, former Bronco Minchella crossed the whitewash as he picked up the pieces following a failed interception by a London player. Brown converted from in front. Minchella added his second try of the contest ten minutes later following a blistering set which saw the hosts go the full length of the field. Brown added the extras. In the latter stages of the first period, Menzie Yere provided a try on a plate for countryman Garry Lo as the winger found space following an exquisite flick pass from the centre. Brown was on target once again, and he also kicked a penalty goal to extend Sheffield’s lead to 20-4 at the break.

Yere was looking dangerous for the Eagles as he burst through the line on a number of occasions and he got his reward on 42 minutes with a typical fend to get to the whitewash. Brown converted. Three tries in six minutes for London got them back into the contest while cutting the deficit to just six points. Ben Evans, Kieran Dixon and Elliot Kear were the try-scorers for the capital club, while Sammut converted two out of three. Sheffield managed to stop the bleeding and the fast flowing nature of Broncos’ attack died down in the next few sets. In the final quarter, Duane Straugheir touched down to restore his side’s two score advantage and Brown’s conversion made it a 12 point lead with 11 minutes to go. The final minutes saw London throw everything at their opponents but the South Yorkshire outfit had all the answers.
