Salford Red Devils 36-20 Huddersfield Giants

Ian Watson’s Salford have moved back into second place in Super League after they proved too strong for Huddersfield at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The Red Devils scored seven tries in the 36-20 victory, including two for man-of-the-match Robert Lui who celebrated signing his new contract in style.

In a tight first quarter, it was the Giants who registered the first points as good play opened up space for Leroy Cudjoe to score in the corner. Danny Brough converted to make it 0-6.

It took Salford until the 20-minute mark to post their first points as Junior Sa’u made the most of some hesitant Giants defence to go over out wide; Michael Dobson’s conversion levelling the scores.

This started a purple patch for the home side as they went over two more times in the next six minutes; Robert Lui using great footwork for the first before a brilliant team try involving Ben Murdoch-Masila, Greg Johnson and try-scorer Kris Welham.

Michael Dobson converted the try of the season contender to take the score out to 18-6.

There was however time for the Giants to hit back before half-time as Brough’s 40/20 set up the field position for Aaron Murphy to reduce the deficit.

Brough was unable to land the extras as Salford took an 18-10 lead into the sheds.

Having started the first half slow, the Red Devils didn’t make the same mistake in the second as Gareth O’Brien stepped inside to score the first points just five minutes in.

Junior Sa’u soon had his second try of the day five minutes later as he found a gap in the Giants defence to open a 16-point gap in Salford’s favour.

Now showing their early season form, the Red Devils were in no mood to stop as the impressive Murdoch-Masila shrugged off two defenders and found Johnson for another four-pointer.

After helping to create a number of scores, Murdoch-Masila got a deserved try on the hour-mark as he crashed over from close range, the score now 36-10.

Huddersfield had been blown away by a scintillating spell from the hosts but they did get two consolation tries in the final quarter through Kruise Leeming and Darnell McIntosh.

It was a strange game in that Huddersfield were probably the better team in the first and last 20 minutes, however Salford were outstanding in the middle periods and fully deserved the win.

It’s a victory that puts them back up to second and level on points with Leeds Rhinos, the team they face in their next Super League match a week today at the AJ Bell Stadium.
