Salford Red Devils 22-14 St Helens

Salford Red Devils 30-10 Widnes Vikings

Salford continued their encouraging start to the Super League season as they notched a third consecutive win of the campaign, over St. Helens at the AJ Bell Stadium.

It was not an enthralling game by any stretch of the imagination, but a Craig Kopczak try and a brace from Michael Dobson were enough to secure the points for the Red Devils.

Alex Walmsley ensured his name was on the score sheet again for the away side, along with Ryan Morgan and Jonny Lomax, but it was not enough for the Saints to come away with the spoils.

St. Helens lost Theo Fages in the first minute to concussion, and they could not recover from his loss as they failed to create much in the way of chances in the first half.

It was a lacklustre opening 40 minutes with neither side threatening to score, the first points coming in the 23rd minute as Dobson slotted over a penalty for the Red Devils.

Both sides provided solid defence, especially the home side who managed to keep out two sets of six for Saints in the dying moments of the first half, but silly penalties from each team made for a poor start.

It took until the 35th minute for Salford to cross the whitewash through Kopczak who bundled his way past Lomax and over the line to put the Devils 8-0 up.

And Salford started the second half the way they finished the first, as a break through the middle of the field courtesy of try-scorer Kopczak put Dobson in to score.

St. Helens did not back down without a fight, though, James Roby played a short pass to Walmsley who crashed over from close range to put the away side within eight points of Salford. Eight minutes later, Morgan crossed in the corner to breathe life into Saints.

Robert Lui was sin binned with ten minutes to go, but Salford heroically kept their opponents out and followed up their defensive efforts with another try from Dobson.

Gareth O’Brien thought about a drop goal, but passed instead to Todd Carney who put in a perfect kick, collected it and then fed in Dobson who crossed to ensure the points were Salford’s.

Although the away side had the last say, as Lomax scored a consolation with two minutes to go, they will be disappointed they didn’t capitalise on some late pressure to get the points.
