Rochdale Hornets 18-42 Sheffield Eagles

Sheffield Eagles made it three wins in four matches with a 42-18 victory over Rochdale Hornets at the Crown Oil Arena. Papua New Guinea winger Garry Lo scored a hat-trick for the visitors while Simon Brown and Greg Burns both put in great performances in key areas of the field.

Mark Aston’s side were 30-12 up at the break but conceded first thanks to a try from Josh Crowley who dotted down a deft grubber into the in-goal area. Lewis Palfrey converted. But two tries in as many minutes from Sheffield got the visitors on their way and they didn’t look back from there. Lo and Elliot Minchella touched down, with Brown converting each. On the half-hour mark, Burns scooted to a four pointer out of dummy-half to extend Eagles’ lead before Brown added the extras. Samir Tahraoui cut the deficit to six points with a converted score of his own but two tries without reply prior to half-time gave Sheffield a healthy advantage. Lo and Jake Spedding were the try-scorers for the South Yorkshire side, who showed their expansive side at times during the first half at Crown Oil Arena.

In the second half, Minchella set up Straugheir for the opening try as Sheffield looked to seal the victory. Brown missed his first conversion of the afternoon but made amends with a penalty goal, which came after Lewis Galbraith notched Rochdale’s third try. Lo completed the game’s scoring with his hat-trick try moments before the hooter sounded. A brilliant win for the Eagles, who will be striving for another victory when they face Dewsbury Rams on Easter Monday. Rochdale Hornets take on Swinton Lions at Heywood Road in round 11.
