Toronto Wolfpack have sensationally knocked Championship side London Broncos out of the Challenge Cup, beating them 30-26 in a pulsating fourth Round tie at Ealing Trailfinders.
In wet conditions with rain pouring down, sport’s first transatlantic team led 18-6 at the break with tries from Craig Hall, Liam Kay and Jack Bussey; Jarrod Sammut replying for the hosts when the score was 10-0.
A William Barthau try reduced the arrears for the Championship side after 44 minutes as the Broncos hinted at a comeback, but those hopes were vanquished a minute later as a brilliant offload from Gary Wheeler sent Jonny Pownall over in the corner, Hall’s conversion restoring the Wolfpack’s 12-point lead. Liam Kay then set up Rhys Jacks to score under the posts to put the visitors up 30-12 with only 20 minutes to go.
Another Sammut try kept London interested but they still needed to score three times to win the game. with four minutes to go Elliot Kear went over to bring the hosts within eight points, but time was now against the 1999 Challenge Cup Finalists. Kieron Dixon scored the try of the game for the Broncos on the final hooter but it wasn’t enough as Paul Rowley’s side ran out 30-26 winners.
Rowley himself called it “an incredible victory” as his team go into Tuesday’s fifth Round Draw, which is live on Radio 5 Live at 7.45am. They will be joined in the hat by the likes of 2015 treble winners Leeds and Huddersfield.
