Leigh Centurions 24-37 Widnes Vikings

Widnes Vikings 36-10 Leigh Centurions

Denis Betts’ Widnes got their first victory of the season at the expense of Leigh thanks to hat-trick from half-back Danny Craven.

It was an impressive performance from the Cheshire side as they did what St Helens and Warrington have failed to do this season and won at the Leigh Sports Village.

They opened the scoring after just three minutes as Tom Gilmore put through a kick with Chris Bridge diving on the ball for the first points.

They extended that lead 10 minutes later when Danny Craven went over after a succession of penalties for the visitors.

Trailing 12-0, it wasn’t until the 26-minute mark that Leigh¬†registered their first points as a neat pass put Danny Tickle over.

This gave the hosts momentum and they levelled the game shortly afterwards as Ben Crooks went through a massive gap, Ben Reynolds second conversion making it 12-12.

However, it was Denis Betts side who went into half-time ahead thanks to another try from Craven, youngster Jordan Johnstone with the break and assist.

Six points to the good, Widnes came out for the second half much like the first and they registered another try through Sam Brooks.

Young half-back Tom Gilmore knocked over the conversion before he kicked a drop-goal a short while later, this took the Vikings lead out to 25-12 with 30 minutes left on the clock.

The visitors breathing space didn’t last long as Leigh centre Crooks went in for his second, before Sam Hopkins try reduced the lead to one point.

With their potential first win of the season now in doubt, Widnes needed to regain their composure and they got it as Craven went over for his hat-trick.

Charly Runciman sealed the win in the final moments in what was a massive performance from the Vikings youngsters, eventually prevailing 37-24 at the Leigh Sports Village.
