Leigh Centurions 22-8 Warrington Wolves

Leigh Centurions ensured the Warrington Wolves stayed rooted to the bottom of the table as they continued their dream start back in Super League.

The victory was Leigh’s first against the Wolves since 1988, with tries from Gareth Hock, Ben Crooks and Adam Higson securing the points and piling further misery on their Lancashire rivals.

Warrington, who only managed one try through Tom Lineham, looked short of confidence and showed no real threat against a Leigh side who were well organised and excellent in defence.

First blood went to the Centurions as Hock charged through a host of Warrington players who could not stop him putting the ball over the line. And they added to the Wolves gloom with Crooks putting the home side 10-0 up eight minutes later.

Warrington struggled to settle into the game with Leigh controlling it from the start, dominating possession to stop the Wolves finding the field position to score.

The away side came close to scoring their first points after 20 minutes but Jack Hughes’ touch down in the corner was chalked off due to a knock on from Rhys Evans in the build up.

A penalty from either side meant the Centurions led 12-2 at half time, and deservedly so as Warrington continued to look out of sorts.

In an error strewn game, neither team played particularly exciting rugby and tempers frayed with Glenn Stewart first getting sin binned in the second half for Leigh, then ten minutes later Lineham saw yellow after swinging for Ryan Hampshire in reaction to his pull back.

Higson and Hock both crossed the whitewash in the 61st and 66th minute and Ben Reynolds kicked a penalty in the 73rd to put the game beyond Warrington’s reach, despite Lineham’s consolation try with ten minutes to go.

Warrington face St. Helens and Hull FC in the next two weeks and will need to improve their discipline and creativity if they are to climb from the foot of the table.
