Leeds Rhinos 42-22 Widnes Vikings

Brian McDermott’s Rhinos side survived a second half scare as they defeated Widnes 42-22 at Headingley to go joint top of the Super League table.

Leading 30-6 at the break, Leeds were pegged back in the second half as the Vikings got within eight points before late tries from Kallum Watkins and Matt Parcell sealed the win.

They wasted little time in working the scoreboard as Danny McGuire’s kick was brilliantly taken by Watkins who touched down after seven minutes.

Three minutes later Parcell was the right man in the right place as McGuire’s kick hit the underside of the crossbar and fell perfectly for the hooker to score.

Joel Moon was the next man to cross the whitewash as he supported a great run and offload from Adam Cuthbertson; Watkins third successful conversion made it 18-0.

Widnes were visibly struggling but they gave their fans something to cheer about in the 25th minute as Tom Gilmore used his footwork from close range for their first four-pointer.

Normal service was resumed moments later as Moon went over for his second try, the centre exchanging passes with winger Ryan Hall to go in unopposed.

The Vikings were unable to cope with the pace and power of Leeds and a piece of quick thinking from Tom Briscoe saw the winger score on the blindside.

Watkins maintained his 100 percent record with the boot as the Rhinos went in at half-time with a 30-6 advantage.

Denis Betts’ men were able to make the second half more competitive and Gilmore got his second try to reduce the deficit to 18 points going into the final quarter.

Now with momentum, the Vikings started to get excited when Chris Houston scored after debutant Owen Farnworth collected and offloaded Gilmore’s reverse kick.

And incredibly the deficit was reduced eight points going into the final 15 minutes when winger Corey Thompson finished off a flowing move to stun the 15,408 Headingley crowd.

The Rhinos fans nerves were eased though when Watkins crossed for his second try, before Parcell ensured they finished with a flourish, scoring his second with a trademark dummy half try.

Watkins made it seven from seven with the boot as Brian McDermott’s side went joint top of the table with a sixth Super League win in seven matches.
