Leeds Rhinos 40-0 Warrington Wolves

Leeds Rhinos 40-0 Warrington Wolves

Matt Parcell scored a hat trick as Leeds beat Warrington 40-0 at Headingley. Brian McDermott’s men were looking to bounce back after their 29-18 loss to Castleford and certainly did with a seven try route against last year’s Grand Finalists.

The Wolves looked to strike early, building plenty of pressure on the Rhinos’ line. A cross-field kick from Kurt Gidley caused havoc for the defence, but Matty Russell’s subsequent grounding was deemed as a knock on by the video referee.

It was the home side, though, who managed to break the deadlock on 11 minutes. Matt Parcell and Tom Briscoe combined down the right to break, before Briscoe drew Ratchford at fullback and offloaded to the Aussie hooker supporting on his outside. Liam Sutcliffe added the extras to give his side a 6-0 lead.

It was a warm evening in West Yorkshire, with temperatures reaching 25 degrees. The heat was having a profound effect on the players, with mistakes creeping into both sides’ game as fatigue set in early.

The Rhinos seemed to deal better with the difficult conditions and were in for their second try 10 minutes before halftime. After some tremendous build up play, Leeds found themselves on the Warrington line and were able to exploit it out-wide as Liam Sutcliffe dummied his way through the defence to score.

He was unable to convert his own try, but did increase his side’s lead moments later, kicking a penalty goal after Tom Lineham moved off the mark when playing the ball. This put Leeds in front 12-0 at the break.

The key for Warrington was to start the second half strongly but found themselves a further 10 points down within eight minutes. Parcell darted from dummy half at close range, before stepping back into the ruck and diving over past Ratchford. Sutcliffe made no mistake with the conversion.

Just five minutes later and Leeds were in again through Jamie Jones-Buchanan. The 35-year-old latched onto a beautifully timed Rob Burrow pass to go through a gap and beat Ratchford for pace to reach the line.

The game has been pretty docile up until now, but boiled over slightly on the hour mark. A disagreement between Daryl Clark and Stevie Ward saw punches thrown, with both players being sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes.

The Rhinos got a penalty out of the incident and made the most of the opportunity through Joel Moon. The centre-turned-halfback scooted from dummy half, before using his exceptional footwork and balance to find a way through the defence. Sutcliffe added the two points to make the scores 28-0.

Leeds could be forgiven for letting up slightly with such a dominant winning margin, but they kept up the intensity in both attack and defence. Chris Hill put Joe Philbin through a gap on the Rhinos line but superb efforts from Liam Sutcliffe and Brett Ferres denied the prop a certain try.

Just moments later and Leeds were back up the other end of the field and managed to win a penalty for a ball steal. They chose to kick at goal to which Sutcliffe obliged.

With 10 minutes to go, the result was inevitable but the Rhinos weren’t done yet. Burrow broke down the left before finding Parcell supporting on the inside for the 24-year-old to go over for his hat trick.

There was just time for one more Rhinos try two minutes from time as Rob Burrow, who was a standout figure all game, broke down the middle before rounding Ratchford to score in the corner. Sutcliffe’s effort was just wide but it didn’t detract from what was a sensational Rhinos performance.
