Leeds Rhinos 38-14 Wakefield Trinity

Leeds Rhinos v Huddersfield Giants

Leeds maintained their 100% home record for 2017, after a tremendous performance saw them beat Wakefield 38-14 on a windy night at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

The Rhinos haven’t lost at home since July, and looked to be back to their best, playing a really expansive and fluent brand of Rugby.

They dominated the early stages, forcing numerous repeat sets on the Wakefield line. And the Trinity defence were up to the challenge for the first 17 minutes, before Kallum Watkins broke the deadlock. After Brett Ferres was held up over the line for the second time in the game, Danny McGuire’s cross-field kick was pouched by Watkins, who rose above Jacob Miller to catch and score. Ashton Golding was on kicking duty, and made no mistake from in front of the posts to give Leeds a 6-0 lead.

It took just five minutes, though, for the visitors to hit back. A knock on from Ryan Hall gave Wakefield a free play just inside their own half, allowing the ever-adventurous Jacob Miller to kick wide for Tom Johnstone. The winger was able to collect the ball, before stepping past Danny McGuire and beating former Stanningley RL teammate Golding to the corner. Sam Williams was unable to level the scores from the touchline.

Trinity continued to build pressure on the Rhinos, with Sam Williams kicking a 40/20 to put them in great field position. Their efforts came to no avail, however, when David Fifita knocked on to turn the ball over.

And it proved to be costly for Wakefield, as Leeds were able to work the ball back up field before Anthony Mullally drove his way over the line from Matt Parcell’s pass. Golding was again able to convert.

The Leeds fullback then increased his side’s lead even further with just over five minutes to go in the half, kicking a penalty goal from right in front of the sticks to make it 14-4.

That looked to be it for the first period, before Watkins was able to grab his second try of the game right on the hooter. Matt Parcell jumped out from dummy half on the Trinity line, before popping a beautiful offload out the back to put the England centre through a gap. Golding continued his 100% kicking record to give his side a 20-4 lead at the break.

The Rhinos came out quicker in the second half and continued their scoring spree, when Ryan Hall scored in the corner after just four minutes on the back of Brett Ferres’ cut-out pass.

Chris Chester’s men were able to weather the storm, though, and managed to get their second try with half an hour to go. David Fifita took Kyle Wood’s pass from close range to barge his way over. Williams converted this time to reduce the deficit to 26-10.

Brian McDermott took this as an opportunity to introduce Rob Burrow into the game, and it didn’t take long for him to make a difference. The halfback laid the ball on a plate to put Adam Cuthbertson over line from 5m out.

The hour mark saw Wakefield reduced to 12 men, after Danny Kirmond was sin binned for a late shot on Burrow.

And Matt Parcell was able to take advantage on the following set, as he darted over from dummy half, beating three men to the line. Golding converted both tries in succession, making it 38-10 to the Rhinos.

The damage to Wakefield was done by now and the game saw a period or respite, with neither side able to capitalise on any opportunities until the final minute.

Jacob Miller lofted a kick to the left on the hooter, which was collected by Johnstone to claim a late consolation. Williams was unable to convert from the touchline, leaving the scores at 38-14 to give Leeds their fourth win of the season.
