Leeds Rhinos 24-22 St Helens

A great performance from young full-back Jack Walker saw the Leeds Rhinos narrowly beat St Helens 24-22 in another classic at Headingley to move up to second in the Betfred Super League.

A first half try from star man Joel Moon and a Jordan Lilley penalty goal cancelled out an Adam Swift opener from St Helens, who lost half-back Matty Smith early on, to register a 6-4 half-time lead.

Second half tries from Stevie Ward, Kallum Watkins and Ryan Hall for the home side gave the Rhinos the victory. St Helens never gave up and tries from Tommy Makinson, James Roby and Alex Walmsley gave the Saints hope throughout the contest, but Leeds hung on to claim the win.

A ferocious first half saw Leeds dominate the early stages, forcing back-to-back goal line drop outs, but the St Helens defence held firm. Next it was Leeds’ turn to show their defensive mettle to deny Saints.

The visitors opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Dominique Peyroux showed good strength to bust out of a Joel Moon tackle, the back-rower found Adam Swift out wide who raced 40 metres to score. Tommy Makinson, taking over the kicking duties from the injured Mark Percival, was wayward with the conversion.

It didn’t take long for the Rhinos to hit back to level the scores. A mistake from St Helens in their own half gifted Leeds great field position Joel Moon capitalised. The in-form Leeds half-back attacked the line from close range and used good balance and strength to spin his way over the line. Jordan Lilley missed the conversion to leave the scores locked up at 4-4.

Leeds took the lead on the 36th minute when St Helens were penalised for holding down near their own line. Lilley chose to go for the penalty giving Leeds a 6-4 lead going into half-time.

St Helens almost retook the lead in the last minute of the first half when hooker James Roby made a break from inside his own half, but was tackled by Leeds full-back Jack Walker with the try line in his site.

The second half started in quick fashion, with Stevie Ward crossing three minutes after the restart. A lovely short ball from Moon found Lilley who in turn supplied the ball to Ward to score. Lilley added the extras to make the score 12-4 in favour of the Rhinos.

St Helens quickly steadied the ship and hit back when Makinson scored, his effort eventually given by the video referee. A cross field kick was spilled by Ash Handley, Wilkin upon gathering the ball then has the ball knocked out his grasp by Ryan Hall, Peyroux was the quickest to react to the loose ball and fed Makinson to score. Makinson converted his own try to close the gap to two points.

Five minutes later St Helens scored again after a superb run and offload from Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook found James Roby who crossed untouched next to the post. Makinson was wide with his conversion leaving the scores at 16-12 in favour of the visitors.

A sin-bin to Jon Wilkin for dangerous contact on Mitch Garbutt turned the tie in Leeds’ favour, and it didn’t take long for the home side to take advantage. A neat cross field kick from Lilley saw Briscoe climb highest to tap the ball back to the waiting Kallum Watkins who touched the ball down for a try. Lilley nailed the conversion to make the score 18-16 with 15 minutes to go.

More instrumental last tackle kicks from Lilley set the platform for Leeds’ next score. A weaving run from star man Moon left the St Helens defence in disarray before giving a crash ball to Ryan Hall to barge his way over. Lilley converted from out wide to extend the lead to eight.

St Helens made it a tense finish when Walmsley powered his way over from dummy half in the 77th minute but Leeds held on to claim the much-needed two points.
