Leeds Rhinos 12-23 Castleford Tigers

Zak Hardaker Castleford deal

Castleford moved seven points clear at the top of the Super League table as they once again defeat local rivals Leeds in front of 18,029 fans at Headingley.

In truth, the quality of the match didn’t match the atmosphere but the Tigers were worthy 23-12 winners as they defeated their big-city neighbours for the seventh time on the trot.

Leeds defended well early in the game and were rewarded when a bizarre piece of play saw Ben Roberts throw the ball straight to Ash Handley on his own line – the youngster awarded the try after it was sent upstairs by referee Robert Hicks.

Hicks quickly became public enemy number one among the Rhinos fans when he adjudged a hand to have caused Paul McShane to have lost the ball. From the next play the Tigers shifted the ball to the left side and Greg Eden raced over for his 31st try of an incredible season.

In the aftermath Leeds captain Danny McGuire was sent to the sin-bin for dissent but the Rhinos managed to keep their opponents out during this period.

A Luke Gale penalty was the final points of a stop-start first half with the home fans unhappy with the performance of referee Hicks, Castleford leading 8-6 at the break.

Much like when the sides met at Magic Weekend earlier in the campaign, the Tigers took control of the game in the second half and it was kickstarted by Zak Hardaker who was booed throughout by his former fans.

Leeds allowed the England full-back to player against his parent club and they were made to pay for that decision when he produced a moment of magic to cut through three defenders to extend the visitors lead.

Cas now looked in control and when Grant Millington touched down Gale’s grubber, they never looked like losing with the score now out to 22-6.

An error by Paul McShane allowed Adam Cuthbertson to score and reduce to the deficit, but man-of-the-match Gale sealed the win with a drop-goal in the final moments to the delight of the travelling fans.
