Hull FC 34-10 Warrington Wolves

Hull FC 14-10 Huddersfield Giants

Round 12 of the Betfred Super League saw Hull FC take on Warrington Wolves as the Airlie Birds looked to carry on an upturn in form after an impressive victory over early pacesetters Castleford Tigers 26-24.

Warrington, unbeaten since the last time these sides clashed in Round 7, were able to edge out Wakefield Trinity 22-20 with a battling display on a night at the KCOM where both sides remembered Hull FC legend Jack Harrison.

The Airlie Birds led early on after a towering kick by Marc Sneyd found Jake Connor in the corner, who rose magnificently to score (4), Sneyd adding the extras: 6-0.

Hull were almost in again, only for Sika Manu to be halted on the line by scrambling Wolves defence. It would only be temporary relief though as Hull quickly worked the ball out to the right edge, Mahe Fonua proceeding to score his third try in two games with an athletic touchdown (9), Sneyd converting to make it 12-0.

The Wolves responded with a try of their own after quick hands and a looping Stefan Ratchford pass found Matty Russell on the left wing, who evaded Steve Michaels to score (14), Declan Patton unable to convert: 12-4.

Sika Manu was sin-binned after an illegal chicken-wing tackle on Ryan Atkins (22). The Wolves duly punished the home side and former FC man Joe Westerman was able to go in under the sticks from a Patton pass (22), Patton then adding the two as the Black and Whites narrowly held the ascendancy 12-10.

Warrington pressure continued as they tried to make the numerical advantage count but Rhys Evans was held up on the line out wide. Pressure was alleviated for the home side as a penalty in front of the sticks was converted by Sneyd (34) leaving the scoreline at 14-10 going into half-time.

The second-half began with a flourish after a breakaway down the middle by Joe Philbin from the kick-off allowed Jack Hughes to seemingly go over for Warrington, only for the Video Referee to rule it out.

Lee Radford’s men responded with an attack of their own as Jake Connor brilliantly released a ball inside for Jamie Shaul to score in the left corner for his sixth try of the season (47), Sneyd converting a tricky kick out wide to extend the home side’s advantage: 20-10.

Hull continued to pile the pressure on the visitors and it resulted in a penalty due to interference at the ruck. Sneyd chose to take the two points (54) as FC began to take control of the game: 22-10.

FC’s efficacious scrum-half subsequently executed a superb 40/20 to give Hull strong field position on Warrington’s line. Albert Kelly running at the defence and showing great strength to stretch over for a score (55), Sneyd accurate with the boot once again to make it 28-10.

The Wolves desperately tried to claw their way back into the game, working the ball out wide to Tom Lineham, who was crucially bundled into touch by an energetic Fonua on the hour mark.

A series of sets would be traded by both teams in the closing stages but the Airlie Birds had the last laugh after an interception on his own line by Fonua, sprinting into space to release inside to the supporting Kelly who made it a brace of tries on the night (74), followed by a successful kick: 34-10.

The Full-time hooter would sound on a night where the Black and Whites produced a thoroughly commanding performance.
