Hull FC 32-12 Widnes Vikings

Castleford Hull combined team

Round 5 of the Super League saw Hull FC do battle with Widnes Vikings. FC would be looking to build on last week’s hard earned victory over St Helens, while Widnes needed a reaction after last week’s 34 – 0 whitewash against Castleford.

Widnes opened the scoring as FC old boy: Aaron Heremaia threw a neat dummy to go over in the corner (4), Lloyd White added the extras to make it 6 – 0 to the visitors.

FC responded immediately as a towering kick by Marc Sneyd was plucked out the air by Mahe Fonua, who brilliantly released an inside ball to the on-running Albert Kelly (6), Sneyd added the kick to make it 6 – 6.

A period of end to end rugby would unfold as both sides played out their sets. The deadlock would be broken eventually as a sweeping FC move out to the wing found Fonua, who lept majestically to cross in the corner (32).

Sneyd duly added the two points to make it 12 – 6 to the Airlie Birds. A high-tackle on Mark Minichiello near the Vikings’ line allowed Sneyd to kick a penalty (40) to make it 14 – 6 going into half-time.

The second half began with a Hull try as Sneyd neatly placed a grubber kick under the posts, which was followed up by Danny Houghton for a try (47) and a successful conversion: 20 – 6.

The home side began to get into their stride as Minichiello broke away down the left, releasing an inside ball to the supporting Jamie Shaul for a quick-fire second score & successful conversion (49): 26 – 6.

Two tries became three in an attacking onslaught as quick hands found Kelly, who breezed past opposing defenders to make it a brace of tries (52) followed by Sneyd’s kick: 32 – 6.

The Vikings finally stopped the rot as Chris Houston’s grubber kick bounced against a defender and Lloyd White was able to catch the ball for an easy score (72) and then convert his own try: 32 – 12.

It would be in vain though as the score finished 32 – 12 to the Black & Whites at full-time in a strong performance.
