Hull FC 24-52 Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos 42-22 Widnes Vikings

Good Friday’s Round 9 Super League clash saw Hull FC take on rivals Leeds Rhinos at the KCOM Stadium.
Both sides were looking for a reaction after FC suffered a 54 – 18 demolition at the hands of Salford Red Devils, while the Rhinos were edged out by a resurgent Warrington Wolves outfit 25 – 18.
The first-half began with a Rhinos try as Danny McGuire went in from close range after some neat footwork (6), Liam Sutcliffe adding the extras to make it 0-6 to the visitors.
Lee Radford’s men responded quickly after a lofted kick by the returning Albert Kelly found Steve Michaels in the right corner, who athletically jumped in for a score (10), Marc Sneyd following up with a conversion: 6-6.
Leeds capitalised on pressure from a penalty as a long pass from McGuire found Ryan Hall on the left to score (16), Sutcliffe adding the two points as the away side edged back ahead: 6-12.
The Rhinos momentum continued and a scoot from Matt Parcell allowed him to stretch over for a try (18), Sutcliffe successfully converting: 6-18.
Some quick hands from Joel Moon left the Airlie Birds defence in disarray as he weaved his way over for an impressive try (23), followed by a kick: 6-24.
The Black and Whites were in danger of suffering a repeat rout but Scott Taylor stopped the rot with a barge over the line from close range (26), Sneyd successfully converting to narrow the margin: 12 – 24.
It would be temporary alleviation though as that man Moon scrambled over to make it a brace of tries (36), Sutcliffe unable to convert: 12-28.
Nonethess, the Rhinos finished the half with a penalty under the sticks as Liam Sutcliffe extended their lead going into the break (40): 12-30.
The home side needed a reaction in the second half and the fans duly got one as Jamie Shaul pierced through the opposition defence with scintillating pace to score (49), Sneyd converting as FC closed the gap: 18-30.
From this point on the game really sprung to life with an electric atmosphere, added to that the Rhinos were placed on a team-warning (53).
After FC conceded a penalty for dissent, Leeds had a chance to extend their lead but Sutcliffe missed from distance (54). He wouldn’t be denied again though, successfully converting a second attempt (57): 18-32.
Hull retrieved the ball from the short kick-off and pressure told as Danny McGuire was sin-binned for conceding another penalty.
The Airlie Birds punished 12-man Leeds as Sneyd sent the onrushing Mark Minichiello over with a sweet pass (58), followed on by a successful kick: 24-32.
Referee James Child began to feature in the game more prominently and Hull found themselves down to 12-men after Captain Gareth Ellis was sin-binned, following on from his side’s team warning (62), Leeds choosing to take the two points which Sutcliffe converted (64) extending their lead to: 24-34.
The Rhinos would punish more poor FC defending as Kallum Watkins went down the right side to score (67), followed by a successful kick: 24-40.
Leeds effectively put the game to bed as Mitch Garbutt pounced on a loose ball to go over from close range (71), Sutcliffe accurate with the boot once again: 24-46.
Hull’s misery was compounded with a second sin-binning of the game, Sika Manu given ten minutes for dissent (76). Leeds exploited the numerical difference as Anthony Mullally ripped through FC’s weakened defence (77), followed by a successful conversion: 24-52.
The full-time hooter sounded as the Rhinos won resoundingly on the day.
