Hull FC 14-10 Huddersfield Giants

The final round of the regular season saw Hull FC face Huddersfield Giants on a sunny evening at the KCOM Stadium.

Lee Radford’s men were looking to stop the rot after three consecutive defeats, while the Giants recent upturn in form has seen them rise to 7th in the Betfred Super League table ahead of the Super 8s.

The home side were the first on the score-sheet after an initial Mahe Fonua break down the right and aided by a subsequent penalty, Mark Minichiello was able to barge over the line from close range (13), Marc Sneyd adding the extras to make it 6-0.

Hull continued to search for openings and off the back of another penalty, great footwork near the line by the returning Gareth Ellis opened up a gap for Josh Bowden to crash over (22), Sneyd converting once more to extend the Black and Whites lead to 12-0.

In a game that was developing into an end-to-end contest, the Giants responded with a score of their own as they worked the ball out wide to the left for Darnell McIntosh to dive over from a neat Jordan Rankin pass (31), Danny Brough adding the two points with a tricky conversion to make it 12-6.

Rick Stone’s men continued to rally and after a questionable penalty decision, the away side worked the ball out to the right for Jermaine McGillvary to power over on the wing (36), Brough unable to add the extras as the Giants narrowed the deficit to just 12-10 as half-time arrived.

The errors continued in the second-half as both sides struggled to take a grip on the game. Josh Griffin going close after running onto his own grubber-kick but knocked on going over the line in the corner.

Sneyd was the next player to go close as he attempted to collect the loose ball in the same corner but he fumbled possession as the hour mark approached.

Both teams continued to battle it out but it was evident neither side possessed the coherence to create an opportunity of real threat.

Hull continued to edge the contest and thought they had scored after Danny Houghton touched down under the sticks from a grubber-kick, but it was adjudged Jake Connor had been taken out in the build-up.

Sneyd opted to kick for goal to extend the Airlie Bird’s narrow lead to 14 – 10 (75) in the closing minutes.

In the end the home side held on for a vital victory that kept their Top 4 hopes alive as both teams gear up for the Super 8s.
