In the only Betfred Super League tie of the week, Huddersfield Giants beat St Helens 24-16 at the John Smith’s Stadium. Tries from Leroy Cudjoe, Martyn Ridyard, Adam O’Brien and Lee Gaskell proved enough for the Giants, who moved three points clear of ninth-placed Catalans Dragons.
The opening try came after 13 minutes as captain Cudjoe crossed the whitewash for the hosts. Ridyard added the extras. It took until four minutes from the interval for the next score of proceedings and it was the two Huddersfield half-backs who combined. A bobbling kick from Danny Brough was touched down by Ridyard, who also kicked the following conversion to extend the lead. However, Saints responded before heading into the sheds. A break from Morgan Knowles was finished off by prop forward Luke Thompson, and the conversion from Mark Percival was successful as the visitors halved their deficit to 12-6 at the break.
With the second half just two minutes old, Saints notched their second try thanks to Percival following passes from Zeb Taia and Jonny Lomax. The conversion wasn’t successful but things were looking much brighter for Justin Holbrook’s men. But with the final quarter looming, Huddersfield regained their two score advantage as O’Brien scythed underneath the sticks from a penalty. Ridyard converted. Saints kept fighting back though and they got their reward through Kyle Amor, who was fed a pass from Jon Wilkin to go over. Percival made it a two point game once again with the conversion. The visitors’ efforts proved in vain though as former Saint Gaskell wrapped up the win for the in-form Giants thanks to a try five minutes from time. Ridyard’s 100% success rate with the boot continued as he added the extras.
