Huddersfield Giants 24-16 Wakefield Trinity

A brilliant final quarter saw Huddersfield pick up the points against West Yorkshire rivals Wakefield as they scored 16 points in 9 minutes.

For a large period, it looked like Chris Chester’s side would get the victory, but just like against Hull FC in week one they surrendered a winning position.

It was a dream first 10 minutes for the Giants and their young centre Sam Wood who went in for two tries.

The first saw him take a beautifully delayed pass from Danny Brough before Kruise Leeming’s offload created a gap for his second.

Wakefield responded well to this early set back as Liam Finn, playing at hooker, burrowed his way in from dummy half to reduce the deficit to 8-4 after 15 minutes.

The Giants fast start was then cancelled out when Ben Jones-Bishop took a pass from Jacob Miller before running 90 metres to score, Sam Williams conversion but Trinity in the lead.

Moments before half-time and Chris Chester’s side went in again, Reece Lyne created the space for Jones-Bishop to go in for his second. Williams was unable to convert but Wakefield went in at the break with a 16-8 lead.

As the game became a real arm-wrestle, it wasn’t until the 63rd minute that the next points were registered as the Giants went in for two quick-fire scores.

Firstly, forward Ukuma Ta’ai cleverly went down the short side to score before Oliver Roberts found a way over from close range. Brough’s solitary conversion had the hosts 18-16 in front.

The next score was going to be the match-winner and it was Huddersfield who got it as Jermaine McGillvary finished off a great move as Brough’s excellent kick put the winger clear.

Brough converted as a scintillating final quarter from the Giants saw them home 24-16 against their West Yorkshire rivals.
