Huddersfield Giants 22-29 Catalans Dragons

Huddersfield Giants 22-29 Catalans Dragons

In the first game of a busy Easter period, the Catalans Dragons brushed aside the challenge of the Huddersfield Giants, putting them to the sword away from home by 29 points to 22.

Huddersfield gave a debut to full back Jake Mamo, who was signed in the off season from NRL side Newcastle Knights, with youngster Darnell McIntosh moving to the wings.  The Dragons were without Jason Batieri, who was replaced by Remi Casty, and gave a debut to young loose forward Lambert Belmas.

Both sides started lively, with each having chances to take the lead, however it was the Giants who opened the scoring on 13 minutes. A cross-field kick from Danny Brough was palmed back expertly by McIntosh for Aaron Murphy to collect and score.  A Brough touchline conversion extended their lead to 6-0.

The Dragons hit back however on 20 minutes through a piece of individual brilliance from Tony Gigot, whose sublime footwork sent him over unopposed under the posts.  Luke Walsh slotted over the extras to level the scores.

After a number of wasted chances from both sides, Huddersfield sparked life into the game and reasserted their lead through Mamo’s debut try 5 minutes before the end of the half.  Sam Wood broke through the Dragons defence and chose to kick inside for Mamo to pick up and score. Brough dragged the conversion wide, with the scores at 10-6.

Not down for long, the Dragons hit back instantly.  After making good ground up field, the Giants lost the ball, only for Richie Myler to then break away with Brayden Wiliame in support to haul the visitors level. Luke Walsh’s second conversion sent the French outfit into the sheds with a slender 12-10 lead.

Catalans started the second half as they ended the first, with a great pass from Krisnan Inu sending Walsh gliding through the Giants defence like a hot knife through butter.  A smart kick through was opportunistically chased by Myler who touched down to increase their lead.  In the aftermath, Huddersfield captain Brough was sent to the sin bin for dissent towards the ref in remonstrating against the decision to award the try.  Walsh’s conversion gave the Dragons an 8 point lead with scores at 18-10.

The visitors, enjoying a purple patch with the extra man, pushed further out of the Giants reach through a try from Vincent Duport in the corner on 56 minutes.  Nice hands from halves Myler and Walsh allowed the winger to waltz over untouched, with Walsh’s sideline conversion making the scores 24-10.

Compounding the Giants misery, Brough returned to the fray only to throw a wild pass which was plucked out of the air by Walsh who strolled out of reach to extend Catalans lead to 28-10 after 62 minutes.

In response, the Giants did hit back through a solid break and kick from Lee Gaskell which was collected by Jermaine McGillvary who crossed outside.  A Brough conversion 14 minutes from time gave the home fans a glimmer of hope, with the deficit narrowed to 28-16.

With three minutes remaining, Gigot slotted over a drop goal to seal a much needed win for the Dragons, with Sam Wood grabbing a consolation try in the dying embers.  The game ended with Catalans running out 29-22 winners in West Yorkshire.  The visitors have now completed back to back wins for the first time since February, whilst the Giants woes continue as they find themselves 7 games without a win.
