Huddersfield Giants 21-26 Castleford Tigers

Super League best players

Castleford Tigers maintained their top-of-the-league status in precarious fashion with their first away win in three games against an inspired Huddersfield Giants.

The Tigers proved they have strength and depth in their squad as they were without Luke Gale, Zak Hardaker and Mike McMeeken who are on England duty.

Jake Mamo’s stunning first-half hat-trick and a Danny Brough drop goal and penalty in the second half was not enough for the Giants to get the result.

Castleford proved why they are in the position they are, fighting back three times to get the points.

Both Jake Webster and Brough were sin binned in the last ten minutes as tempers frayed to set up a grand-stand finish, but Jesse Sene-Lefao’s try with five minutes to go meant Castleford remain at the summit of Super League.

Huddersfield were buoyed after their emphatic victory over the Leeds Rhinos last week and came out fighting in the first half.

Despite the Tigers’ league position, they did not pose as much a threat as they have been known for this season and Huddersfield thwarted their efforts convincingly.

Castleford did draw first blood though, after what could have been deemed a fortuitous decision in the middle of the park.

Rangi Chase threw a pass that looked to be going forward but Huddersfield were penalised for a knock on. The Tigers took full advantage and eased the ball to the left for Joel Monaghan to score his fifth try of the season, with Paul McShane adding the extras.

But Huddersfield levelled the scores 11 minutes later as Brough forced a goal-line dropout, which gave the home side good field position. A brilliant offload from Dale Ferguson allowed Aaron Murphy to scoot through the Castleford defence and feed in Mamo to cross under the posts.

And the full-back scored his second just four minutes later as Huddersfield looked re-energised in attack to take a 12-6 lead.

For all the Giants good work, they ruined it when Shannon Wakeman knocked on just after the score to the benefit of Castleford. And benefit they did as they charged up the field. Chase threw an inch-perfect pass out wide for Greg Minikin to dot down for his 13th of the season.

It proved to be an end-to-end game as Huddersfield regained the lead going into the break after a delicate kick from Brough meant Mamo could pounce on the ball for a stunning first-half hat-trick.

But Castleford hit back inside the first ten minutes of the restart as Daniel Smith’s knock on gave the away side the chance to storm towards the Huddersfield line.

McShane proved he could fit in seamlessly in Gale’s absence as he kicked a perfect ball for Monaghan to bat down into the path of Greg Eden who scored against his former employees to level the scores at 18 apiece.

And stand-in kicker McShane booted Castleford into the lead, despite a Brough drop goal having put the home side in front.

Brough then scored another penalty to edge Huddersfield a point ahead, and a sin-bin apiece for Webster and the Giants’ captain meant both sides finished the game a man down.

With both teams lacking a man, it was Castleford who took full advantage and Sene-Lefao crossed the whitewash to give the away side another two points.

Huddersfield came close in the dying seconds but the Tigers’ defence stayed strong.
