Huddersfield Giants 12-28 Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos managed to get their third win in a row on Friday, after a determined defensive performance saw them run out 28-12 winners at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Rhinos got on the front early on, with the likes of Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Adam Cuthbertson setting a good platform. And it was Cuthbertson’s offload that put the visitors in good field position for their first try on five minutes.

He managed to get the ball away during a tackle in midfield that allowed his side to push forward and attack on the Huddersfield line. The ball went from Danny McGuire to Ashton Golding, who was able to poke through the defensive line and offload to Tom Briscoe for the try. Golding, who kicked seven from seven in last week’s win, was unable to convert from the touchline.

And it took just minutes for Leeds to extend their lead. They again found themselves on the Giants’ line, before Brett Ferres’ deft grubber kick on the last managed to find Ryan Hall for a score in the left corner. Golding this time added the extras to give his side a 10-point advantage after as many minutes.

There was a worry that Leeds would run away with the game at this point, but the Giants were able to weather the storm before taking control of the game altogether. Lee Gaskell decided to take the line on from 20m out, before popping a neat pass out to put Ukuma Ta’ai through a sizeable gap.

Just one set later and the home side were in front, after some quick hands on the Leeds line found Jermaine McGillvary with plenty of space on the wing, who wasn’t going to be stopped from so close. Brough converted both tries to edge his side in front after 22 minutes.

The momentum continued to seesaw, with Leeds matching Huddersfield’s tries with another two scores of their own.

Firstly, some desperation play saw the ball flung wide and picked up on-the-bounce by Carl Ablett, who managed to slide his way over despite a tremendous last-ditch effort from young fullback Darnell McIntosh.

Then, just five minutes before halftime, Ablett turned provider, putting a kick through on the last tackle that managed to find Matt Parcell chasing through. Golding was unable to convert either try, however.

That looked to be it for the first half, until Lee Gaskell broke through the middle in the final minute. He was brought to ground by Golding before the Giants shifted it wide, but were unable to get over the try line. This meant Leeds went in at the break as 18-12 leaders, after a half that wasn’t short on tries.

It was an explosive start to the second half, after a scuffle between Carl Ablett and Danny Brough saw both players sin binned by referee Ben Thaler for punching. This came just moments after the Giants had a try disallowed when McIntosh spilled Danny Brough’s kick over the line.

The game started to get scrappy here, with both sides’ desperation to move the ball forward causing them to make simple mistakes. These eventually counted, as Leeds were given a penalty close to the Giants’ line for an incorrect play the ball; a rule that Ben Thaler seemed rather fond of all game. McGuire chose to kick for goal, to which Golding obliged to make it 20-12 to the Rhinos.

Huddersfield were creating opportunities, but just falling short when it came to finishing them off, having plenty of ball on the Rhinos’ line. After some determined goal-line defence, however, Leeds were able to work the ball down to the other end of the field, gaining three repeat sets on the bounce in the Huddersfield half.

And after a high tackle on Rob Burrow, they extended their lead by two with just under ten minutes to go, as Liam Sutcliffe kicked his 100th goal in his 100th game, deputising for Ashton Golding who went off injured.

With 90 seconds remaining, there was just time for one more try, as Jordan Baldwinson managed to grab a well-deserved try as he charged his way over from close range. Sutcliffe converted to wrap up an impressive display and make the final score 28-12 to the Rhinos.
