Catalans Dragons 24-32 Castleford Tigers

Castleford Tigers finished the regular season at the top of the table after surviving a Catalans Dragons comeback to win 32-24 at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

The Tigers lead 14-0 through tries from Jy Hitchcox and Zak Hardaker before a late show in the first half from the home side saw them lead 18-16 at half time, with tries from Lucas Albert, Tony Gigot and Fouad Yaha gving Catalans some confidence before the Middle-8’s.

Castleford restored their lead early in the second half through Greg Minkin, before a Vincent Duport penalty try and two Tigers sin binnings set up a tense final ten minutes. The Tigers rallied on thanks to late tries from Hitchcox and Paul McShane ultimately sealing the win.

Cas began the first half in explosive fashion, racing to a 14-0 lead after 20 minutes to leave the Dragons stunned. A fine offload in the tackle from Tigers prop Grant Millington allowed Michael Shenton to exploit some disorganised Catalans defence. The centre found his wing partner Hitchcox who had too much speed for the covering defence to score in the corner. Luke Gale added his first conversion of the evening to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

A penalty goal soon followed before a magical piece of play by Castleford fullback Hardaker increased the lead. Straight from the scrum inside his own ten metre area, Hardaker got on the outside of Yaha before racing 90 metres to score. Gale was on target again to give Castleford a 14-point lead before the Dragons revival.

Two minutes after the Hardaker try, Albert scored for the Dragons after a lovely offload from Julian Bousquet allowed Albert to round Hardaker before scoring under the posts. Gigot added the extras to cut the Tigers’ lead to eight.

Gigot added a try himself in the 27th minute after some good work from Krisnan Inu allowed Gigot to support his centre to finish off a flowing move. Gigot once again converted the extras to bring the scores to 12-14 with 13 minutes of the first half still to play.

Catalans finally hit the front after 35 minutes on the back of a good run from second rower Louis Anderson who set the platform. Quick hands from Gigot and Vincent Duport let a rampaging Yaha score in the corner. The added conversion made the score 18-14 before a monstrous 50-metre Zak Hardaker penalty kick reduced the deficit to a mere two points heading into the half-time sheds.

Castleford restored their lead 13 minutes into the second half through Greg Minikin. The winger was on hand to collect Joel Monaghan’s tap back from a cross-field kick before kicking ahead and regathering to score a fine try. Gale added the conversion.

The game, however, was far from over when a ten-minute spell saw Castleford players Kevin Larroyer and Greg McMeeken receive sin bins for separate offences.  The Dragons’ pressure finally told when Duport was awarded a penalty try. The video referee Robert Hicks adjudged Hardaker of dangerous play when attempting to strike the ball with his foot as Duport was in the act of scoring. Gigot’s conversion gave Catalans a 24-22 lead with 12 minutes left.

But late on Castleford again showed their league leaders credentials when, in the 74th minute, Hitchcox grabbed his second of the evening in superb fashion. Shenton found Hitchcox an inch of space on the left edge before the winger flew above the Catalans defence to touch down. Gale kept his 100% conversion rate to give the Tigers a 28-24 lead.

A late try from McShane sealed the victory, which sees the Castleford Tigers end the regular rounds of the season top of the table.
