Catalans Dragons 24-30 Leeds Rhinos

Danny McGuire future

Leeds boosted their top four hopes as Danny McGuire’s late try proved to be the difference in a 30-24 victory over Catalans at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

The Dragons suffered a major setback at the start of the game when Greg Bird left the field with a nasty cut to the eye and he wouldn’t return.

Leeds wasted no time in opening the scoring as Danny McGuire’s pin-point kick found Liam Sutcliffe who rose above the defender to score.

Catalans responded as Louis Anderson powered over after hesitation in the Rhinos right edge defence, video referee awarded the try but denied Tony Gigot another score for obstruction moments later.

Julian Bousquet then went over, again making the most of some poor right-side Leeds defence and this time video referee Hicks awarded the try.

The Dragons opened up breathing space just past the half-hour when Brayden Williame went over but Stevie Ward’s try on the half-time hooter meant Laurent Frayssinous’ side only held a 16-12 lead at the break.

The second-half brought no better luck for Gigot who had another try disallowed by the video referee after great work in defence from Ashton Golding.

Brian McDermott’s team were on the back foot though as their ill-discipline gave the Dragons field position and Remi Casty put them two scores up again after a break from Richie Myler.

Leeds wouldn’t give up though and Adam Cuthbertson powered over to put the game back in the balance at 22-18.

Now with momentum and with the French outfit looking tired, the Rhinos began to throw the ball around and they scored one of the tries of the season as Joel Moon and Ash Handley combined to put Rob Burrow in at the corner.

Sutcliffe converted but a penalty goal from Gigot made it 24-24 going into the final seven minutes.

The match deciding moment happened with four minutes left as Danny McGuire rolled back the years, dummying his way over from close range to the dismay of the home crowd.

Sutcliffe converted and the Rhinos held on to win 30-24 in the South of France.
