Catalans Dragons 24-28 St Helens

St Helens got a much-needed win as Jack Owens scored the crucial try in a gutsy defeat of Catalans in Perpignan.

French international Theo Fages was at the heart of everything against his countrymen, producing a wonderful offload for Owens to go in for the match-winner.

Jon Wilkin, who has come in for criticism this week, combined with Fages and Mark Percival to put winger Adam Swift in for the first try after just three minutes.

The Dragons response was almost instant as Thomas Bosc, playing at full-back, found a gap in the defence less than a minute later.

Fages again was the creator of the visitors second try as he linked up with Tommy Makinson to allow Percival to cross and restore the lead.

Again, the French outfit hit straight back as former Saints half-back Luke Walsh found prop Julien Bousquet, he powered in to give Catalans the lead for the first time.

In an incredible tit-for-tat opening quarter, the Red V responded as centre Ryan Morgan finished off a flowing move for the Saints third try of the game.

Both teams then had tries denied by the video referee before Percival broke through to find Roby, the hooker then passed to Adam Walker who got the ball down under pressure.

Breathing space for the Saints didn’t last long as Iain Thornley scored to make it a four-point game at the break with St Helens ahead 22-18.

The second period was a much tighter affair with points harder to come by, although Paul Aiton’s early score suggested otherwise as the Dragons went 24-22 ahead.

With defences now on top, it would take something special to break through and it came with less than 10 minutes left as star man Fages made the break for Jack Owens to score.

Catalans threw the kitchen sink at Saints in the final stages, but this was Keiron Cunningham’s day as his side got a much-needed 28-24 victory in the South of France.
