Catalans Dragons 23-18 Hull FC

Following on from Friday’s fixtures, Round 16 of the Betfred Super League saw Catalans Dragons take on Hull FC at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, with both sides looking to bounce back from defeats.

It was the injury hit Dragons who broke the deadlock early on after a smart ball from Luke Walsh sent FC old boy Sam Moa over (7), Walsh adding the extras to make it 6-0 to the home side.

As the 20-minute mark approached, an altercation between Danny Washbrook and Sam Moa led to the Catalans forward’s sin-binning. With a penalty near the line, Albert Kelly pounced to score his 14th try of the season (18), Jake Connor kicking the two points to tie the scores at 6-6.

The Airlie Birds conceded a penalty and Walsh was able to edge the Dragons back ahead (24) 8-6.

The Black and Whites had a great chance to respond in the corner but Steve Michaels was held up over the line thanks to great Dragons cover defence. In an end-to-end affair, Catalans broke up the field after Michaels allowed a kick to bounce, Remi Casty collecting and offloading the loose ball to Arthur Romano, only to be held up over the whitewash.

Luke Walsh closed the half out with a drop-goal to leave the Dragons narrowly 9 – 6 ahead at half-time.

The second-half began with another Catalans penalty as Jamie Shaul was penalised for holding down allowing Walsh to slot over a penalty (43) and extend the French side’s lead to 11-6.

Hull finally capitalised after Connor intercepted Paul Aiton’s pass and then offload to Nick Rawsthorne who touched down (55), Connor converting to edge FC ahead: 11-12.

The away side had a great opportunity to score another but the Video Referee adjudged Michaels to have insufficient pressure as he grounded the ball. Having been placed on a team warning, Romano was sent to the sin-bin for persistent offending (63) leaving the Dragons down by one man.

Hull took advantage of this numerical difference and Rawsthorne made it a brace of tries on the night, scoring out wide from a sweeping move (68), Connor converting to leave the scoreline at 11-18.

The Pepignan outfit continued to battle and after a high kick from Walsh, Josh Griffin and Rawsthorne unable to deal with the threat and Fouad Yaha pounced (71), Walsh converting from out wide to close the gap to 17-18.

The momentum swang towards the home side from this point as the mercurial Walsh lofted a kick towards the posts which was expertly collected by Tony Gigot (73) followed by a Walsh conversion as the Dragons turned the game on its head at 23-18.

Hull’s frustrations culminated in a high tackle from Liam Watts leading to a red card for the forward soon after.

Lee Radford’s men refused to back down as Kelly broke away in the dying embers of the game but a thunderous hit from Greg Bird forced the knock-on leaving the full-time score at 23-18 to the Dragons.
