Castleford Tigers 43-26 Catalans Dragons

Castleford recovered from 14-0 down to defeat Catalans Dragons 43-26 in a try fest on a fine sunny day at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

The Tigers were slow out of the starting blocks but were too quick and powerful for the Perpignan outfit once they got into their stride, with the result putting them top of the Super League table.

Ben Roberts returned in the halves for the Tigers with Rangi Chase among the interchanges after a three-game absence.

Catalans Dragons head coach Laurent Frayssinous was without Thomas Bosc and opted to go with size as he named four prop forwards on the bench.

The visitors opened the scoring inside two minutes as a fine flowing move gave Iain Thornley possession out wide and he did brilliantly to finish in the corner.

Five minutes later and the French outfit were in again, great work around the ruck allowed Richie Myler to go over to leave the home crowd stunned.

Luke Walsh added both conversions and a penalty goal moments later to give the Dragons a 14-0 lead after only 10 minutes.

The Tigers needed a response and they got one almost immediately as the French side knocked on from the kick-off to give the hosts their first attacking opportunity.

From it they capitalised as a sweeping right-to-left move brought Zak Hardaker into the line in space and the full-back used his pace to dummy his way over from close range.

Inevitably the Tigers gained momentum and they would score their second try on the 25-minute mark, forward Junior Moors with soft hands to send Grant Millington through a gap.

Now on a roll, the first-half comeback was complete when Jake Webster delivered a magnificent ball out of the back for Joel Monaghan to finish acrobatically in the corner.

And there was still time for one more Tigers try before the break as after winning the scrum against the feed, Ben Roberts kicked over for Greg Eden to score.

Luke Gale missed his first conversion of the game but Daryl Powell’s side went into half-time with a 22-14 lead.

Much like the first half, Catalans came out all guns blazing and they scored with the first set of the second period, Louis Anderson powering onto a Richie Myler pass to score under the sticks.

Castleford were quicker to respond this time around as Junior Moors took a short ball to walk through a huge gap in the Dragons defence.

Gale converted before landing a penalty goal shortly afterwards to make it 30-20.

The visitors really needed to score next but they didn’t, the Tigers putting together another fine move to release Eden out wide, he raced clear before the supporting Shenton crossed.

Gale kicked a drop-goal before Eden scored his second with a fine solo effort. Vincent Duport got the final try of the game but it was Castleford’s day as they prevailed 43-26.
