Castleford Tigers 38-14 Salford Red Devils

Castleford Tigers maintained their 100% home record with a clinical display over an ill-disciplined Salford Red Devils 38-14 at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, with an injury to Tigers’ winger Greg Eden the only sour note on another ‘Classy Cas’ performance.

A serious shoulder injury to Super League top try-scorer Greg Eden midway through the first half will leave Daryl Powell devastated, but Joel Monaghan stepped up and scored two tries on the night.

Further tries from Ben Robert and Zak Hardaker, plus the two from Eden before leaving the field, made the score look comfortable. Tries from Gareth O’Brien, Kris Welham and Jake Bibby wasn’t enough for Salford, who move down to third.

It didn’t take long for Castleford to open their try-scoring account for the night. After a dominant opening five minutes, a superb right to left set play created space out wide for Luke Gale to find Greg Eden to score his 33rd try of the season. Gale’s conversion attempt bounced back off the upright to leave the score at 4-0.

Four minutes later, Eden went from hero to zero, after his error attempting to defuse a Salford bomb lead to a Gareth O’Brien try. The Red Devils’ fullback found himself some space on the left-hand side and crossed after a dummy close to the line fooled the Castleford defence. Dobson drifted his conversion attempt wide to lock the scores up at 4-4.

A sublime 40/20 from Castleford hooker Paul McShane, coupled with a crucial knock down from Salford’s Todd Carney stopped a certain try, paved the way for Ben Roberts to give Castleford back the lead. Roberts showed both skill and strength to score from the scrum in a brilliant solo effort. Gale made no mistake with the extras to take the lead out to six.

On the back of a 4-1 penalty count in favour of the home side, the Tigers were able to mount more pressure, with Eden’s second coming in the 24th minute. Another spectacular diving effort saw Eden grab the four-pointer, only to injure his shoulder in the grounding, forcing Super League’s top scorer to leave the field. Gale slotted over the conversion and added a penalty goal moments later to register a 18-4 lead at the half hour mark.

Salford weathered the storm and went into halftime only eight points behind after a wonderful offload from Lama Tasi set Rober Lui away who’s pass resulted in a Kris Welham try. Dobson added the extras to make the scores 18-10 going into the sheds.

The second half began in the same fashion for the Tigers, with Joel Monaghan, who replaced Eden on the wing, crosses after good hands from Gale and Shenton. Gale converted the extras to increase Castleford’s lead to 14.

Three minutes later Castleford went over again, with Zak Hardaker finishing off a lovely move started by Gale. Shenton breaks the Salford line and finds Hardaker on his inside. Gale added the extras.

After a slow start to the second half for Salford, Ian Watson’s men finally hit back when Ryan Bibby, who earlier knocked the ball on in the act of scoring, made no mistake after barging his way over to touch down in the corner. Dobson went wide with his conversion to make the scores 30-14 with half an hour to play.

A second try for Castleford’s Monaghan and another penalty goal from Gale late on cemented the victory for the league leaders, who kept their 100% home record intact.
