Castleford Tigers 32-22 Widnes Vikings

Greg Eden England

Greg Eden notched up another hat-trick for Castleford as they came from 22-10 down to defeat a spirited Widnes side at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

It wasn’t until six minutes from time that the Tigers got their noses back in front with Eden’s third try as the Vikings very nearly pulled off one of Super League’s biggest shocks.

Cas scored the first points of the game as after numerous sets on the Widnes line, the ball was spread wide from the scrum for Super League’s top try scorer Eden to add another four-pointer to his tally.

The Vikings didn’t roll over though and they hit back within the first quarter as Ryan Ince spectacularly finished in the corner with Ed Chamberlain’s conversion giving the visitors a shock lead after 20 minutes.

Denis Betts team went over again as full-back Jack Johnson scored a brilliant individual try, using great footwork to evade defenders before stretching out to put the ball down.

The Tigers responded right on half-time as prop forward Gadwin Springer used his power to smash his way over, Luke Gale’s conversion meant the home side trailed 12-10 at the break.

Widnes extended their lead early in the second half as Corey Thompson scored on his return from injury taking a great pass from centre Charly Runciman.

Incredibly the Vikings crossed again two minutes later through scrum-half Jordan Johnstone, Chamberlain’s conversion giving them a 22-10 lead on the 50-minute mark.

The home crowd were stunned but a trademark Tigers’ run around allowed Ben Roberts to feed Greg Minikin for a much-needed try and like so often this season Daryl Powell’s men backed it up.

Luke Gale providing a pin-point kick for Eden to notch his second and reduce the deficit to two.

For a while it looked like Widnes would hold onto their 22-20 advantage but Castleford found a way over six minutes from time, again it was a scrum that unlocked their defence as Eden crossed for his hat-trick.

Matt Cook then put the game beyond doubt with two minutes to go as the prop powered over from close range.

Gale made no mistake with the final conversion, the score finishing up 32-22 in favour of the hosts in a match they were made to work very hard to win.
