Castleford Tigers 29-18 Leeds Rhinos

Castleford Tigers closed out the 2017 Magic Weekend with an entertaining victory over Leeds Rhinos.

The Tigers scored some stunning tries with Greg Eden bagging a second-half hat-trick helping his side to a ‘magic’ win.

Luke Gale reclaimed his own high kick to open the scoring for Castleford in the fourth minute. Gale’s kick was batted down by Michael Shenton and the Tigers half back was on the spot to touch down. Gale converted his own try, 6-0.

Brad Singleton charged over the line, but referee Phil Bentham ruled he didn’t ground the ball in the 13th minute. It was the right call and great work by the Cas defence.

The Rhinos made their pressure count when Kallum Watkins took Danny McGuire’s pass before going through the cover to score in the 15th minute. The ball was passed along the line and McGuire’s cut-out pass created a two-on-one, and Watkins stepped inside Eden to score. Liam Sutcliffe’s conversion attempt looked on target but curled out and hit the post before bouncing away, 6-4.

Leeds had another player held up over the line in the 26th minute. This time it was Anthony Mullally after taking a short pass from Liam Parcell between the posts on the last tackle.

Castleford broke away from the scrum and put Eden in space, who ran almost the entire length of the field to score in the 35th minute. The ref sent it to the screen as a try, however, there was crossing from the Tigers in the build-up which meant it was chalked off.

Moments later, Leeds were awarded a penalty. Sutcliffe pointed to the posts and tied the game up with the penalty goal, 6-6.

Gale attempted a drop-goal just before the half-time hooter but mishit it and it went wide.

There was nothing separating the two teams in the first half as the score was level at the break but Castleford took control early in the second period.

The ball was spread wide and after having an effort chalked off in the first half, Eden finally had a try in the 48th minute. Gale added the touchline conversion to give his side a 12-6 lead.

Two minutes later Cas were in again. It was another try for Eden but what a pass from Michael Shenton. The skipper pulled out a wonder ball to send the winger over. Gale converted again from the sideline, 18-6.

Tom Holmes took McGuire’s kick and raced the length of the field to score in the corner in the 57th minute. Gale missed his first kick of the game, but his side were leading 22-6 with 22 minutes to go.

Eden got his hat-trick in the 64th minute. It was great play from the Tigers as they shifted the ball from one side to the other. Gale converted from the touchline, 28-6.

Joel Moon got a try back for Leeds in the 67th minute. He held off the tackle of Holmes and stretched out to score. Sutcliffe added the conversion to cut the gap to 28-12 with 11 minutes to play.

Gale kicked a drop-goal to edge his side further in front at 29-12 with seven minutes to go.

Sutcliffe got over for the Rhinos third try two minutes from time after a no-look pass by Stevie Ward. Sutcliffe converted his own try, 29-18.

Castleford are now two points clear at the top of Super League after another strong show.
