English clubs want NRL to buy Super League – “I was contacted by UK club owners”

Canterbury Bulldogs Director of Rugby and general NRL pundit Gus Gould has claimed that the owners of several Super League clubs have expressed to him that they would like the NRL to purchase Super League.

Gould is most notorious among English fans for his brash statement that Penrith would be able to ‘declare at half time’ when previewing the Penthers’ infamous World Club Challenge loss to St Helens in 2023, however, he has since become a strong advocate for the English game.

He has spoken recently on the topic of the NRL buying Super League and also becoming the sole governing body for the sport, something that he believes would save the international game. The state of the international game has been a hot topic after England’s game against France with fans disappointed at how the game was promoted, produced and attended.

Gould has now revealed live on Australian TV that he believes there is a desire among English Super League owners for NRL involvement and a potential buyout to help the sport, something Gould also clearly believes in as he’s expressed the need for the NRL to become akin to the Premier League in football and lead the way for other domestic competitions.

Gould was debating the subject of NRL investing in Super League live on Channel Nine in Australia as he revealed insight that several Super League owners would be open to NRL investment, although he did note that the ‘administration’ was less keen.

The former Penrith coach said: “We are on the doorstep of greatness. I think more than ever in our history, Rugby League has a real chance to go to another level.

“I honestly believe that the NRL should buy the English Super League. I think that the NRL needs to be the EPL (Premier League) of World Rugby League as the EPL is for soccer over there in that part of the world.

“I think that we could really build a European game, I think we could build the English Super League game. I was contacted after those comments by several owners, the top owners in the UK, saying that they think the NRL would be pushing against an open door if they wanted to talk about that.”

He then elaborated, arguing that clubs would “love as much support as possible”, but that the higher-ups are not as keen on NRL involvement.

“That view is not so much that of the administration there, but certainly, the clubs themselves would love as much support as possible. The UK Super League is not doing as well financially as it possibly could.”

It would also be beneficial to the NRL but also the wider game, as Gould explained: “It’s another source of talent there. It’s certainly another pool of development. We can help the UK with the development of youngsters over there. Some of the richer clubs do have that but not all right through England. I think we need to help them.
