England international Herbie Farnworth names his 2025 target amid Kristian Woolf verdict

Herbie Farnworth in England action

Herbie Farnworth is confident that he is in for a special year with the Dolphins as he readies himself for the start of the NRL season. The England international was one of the stars of the NRL last season, earning himself a spot in the team of the year for his performances before lighting up the Test series with Samoa in the autumn.

As such, from a personal perspective, the Lancashire-born centre will look back on 2024 fondly. However, it’s fair to say it was frustrating from a Dolphins angle with the club falling just short of a play-off spot in the NRL ladder after losing 13 of their 24 games.

Farnworth is focused on rectifying that in his second season with the club, though, under new head coach Kristian Woolf and he has a personal target, too, as he looks to build on his skills and ability.

“I’m working super hard at my game and probably a big focus of mine is my defence this year,” Farnworth told media Down Under. “That’s one thing we’re focusing on as a team as a whole and it’s definitely somewhere I’m going to step up in the season coming up, that’s one of my aims.

“That’s where you win and lose games and the stats show it as well. If you keep teams below 18 points you’re going to finish in that top four and that’s our aim for the year.”

He added: “I had a great year there [at Brisbane Broncos] in ’23 but I’d like to think I built on myself as a player last year and leading into the England Test series and hopefully push forward again for this year as well. We have a great squad here and a bunch of young lads who are willing to work really hard so I think we can do something good this year.”

Of course, Super League fans will know all about Woolf and what he is capable of as a head coach, having seen him excel while in charge of St Helens. However, this season will be his first in charge of an NRL side after stepping up from being Wayne Bennett’s assistant last year.

“I obviously had him a lot last year as well, so it’s just pretty similar to last year and building on that,” the England man added when asked about Woolf. “Massive on effort and work rate.

“All the boys have known Woolfy a long time and we have a big Tongan presence in the team, he’s had them for a couple of years as well so that helps the boys.”
