England international backed to play key NRL role in 2025

England international Dom Young will be one of the most senior men in an inexperienced Sydney Roosters outside back line up next season, Trent Robinson has confirmed.

The Roosters have lost high profile personnel on the edges with key men Joseph Sua’ali’i and Joseph Manu leaving the club to take up opportunities in rugby union. The NRL outfit have also allowed Michael Jennings to depart the club to leave them lacking a raft of senior experience on the edges.

As such, Young will be one of the key members of the Roosters back line in 2025 and he’ll be keen to build on what was an impressive first season with the club. Joining the Roosters for 2024 from Newcastle Knights, where he scored 43 tries in 51 games, Young made quite a splash under Robinson.

He scored 20 tries across the season, with a hat-trick coming in the win over Parramatta Eels later in the campaign, and his efforts were pivotal to the club reaching the final four of the NRL play-offs.

Ultimately, the Roosters’ season was ended by Melbourne Storm, but Young, who represented England versus Samoa in October will be looking to kick on once more, add even more tries to his tally and help the Eastern Suburbs outfit towards glory after seeing his role confirmed by Robinson.

“Robert Toia, Billy Smith, Mark Nawaqanitawase, and then additional development from Dom Young, in his second year with us and Junior Pauga played some really good footy last season,” the Roosters boss told the Daily Telegraph when asked about his outside back options for the new season.

“People have been talking about what’s not here, but we haven’t been caught short on that. We knew what was coming through and we’ve decided to back those guys now because we believe in them.’’

Having made the move from Huddersfield Giants in 2020, Young has spent the last four seasons playing in the NRL and at the age of 23, he still has plenty more room for growth and improvement.
