England versus France international faces schedule clash with huge Euros game

England RL’s test game against France has been handed another blow to its chances of securing a large audience.

It’s very clear that international rugby league isn’t what it used to be – gone are the days of tens of thousands of fans watching yearly Ashes events, and this year, there’s only one mid-season game for England – against France.

Last year, England beat France 64-0 in both games of a men’s and women’s double-header, showing a huge difference in quality between the nations.

Both Ash Handley and George Williams scored a hat-trick that day, and they both return to the side this year, but it very much has the air of a second-string squad due to some of the selections, which Shaun Wane suggested was looking towards the future.

The games are being played ahead of an RFL Championship home game for Toulouse Olympique at the same venue.

We already knew that the viewing figures would take a huge hit due to the game not being picked up by the BBC or Sky Sports.

Instead, it will be shown on SuperLeague+, which usually requires a subscription for league games.

This one will be free, but as the platform isn’t available to use on most televisions, it will clearly be skipped by many supporters who would otherwise have tuned in.

It has another issue, however, in that there’s a clash with the football European Championship – Switzerland will be playing Italy at the same time¬† as the men’s game, live on either BBC or ITV – a mainstream broadcaster that’s free-to-air and available on all televisions.

It’s so much easier to access – and a big event – so surely many will opt to watch this instead.

After that game, Germany face Denmark in another huge fixture.

Hopefully, England’s series against Tonga – to be held in Wigan and Leeds this autumn – will be managed more favourably.
