England centre Herbie Farnworth’s World Cup hopes dealt massive blow

Herbie Farnworth has really caught the eye at Brisbane this year.

Scoring tries for fun, he’s perhaps been the NRL’s best centre so far in 2022 and continued that with another two tries today against the Canberra Raiders showing good awareness to get the ball down in the corner despite the attentions of plenty of defenders for a lovely score to give the Broncos an 18-12 lead.

His form, coupled with the fast start to the season conjured up by Newcastle Knights winger Dom Young had fans calling for the two combining for England in the World Cup.

However, Young’s injury led to a question mark over his chances but Farnworth looked set to be one of the first names on Shaun Wane’s team sheet when it came to having a tilt at World Cup glory – but now there’s a question mark over his hopes as he went off injured today around the bicep area.

He will likely be back for the end of the season but it will sap his brilliant form and could see the likes of Mark Percival, Oliver Gildart and the returning Harry Newman push into the 17 ahead of him if he can’t recapture his form before the tournament.

He was part of a triple injury blow for the Broncos today including star man Adam Reynolds who has inspired their revolution.

They won the game 24-18 but finished the contest without a fit subsitute.
