England captain Sam Tomkins joins the long list of injuries for Catalans Dragons

It’s been reported earlier in the week and earlier today that Catalans are in somewhat of an injury crisis with Mike McMeeken having broken his arm at the World Cup and Fouad Yaha suffering a shoulder dislocation, but now the French side have announced Sam Tomkins could also miss time.

It’s been announced officially by the Perpignan team that both England stars underwent operations, but the news regarding Tomkins is a recent revelation and is regarding a knee issue.

A statement on their site read: “Fouad Yaha dislocated his right shoulder during training this morning.

“The France International winger, who became last season the club’s all-time leading try scorer, will see a specialist next week to assess the injury.

“Sam Tomkins and Mike McMeeken both underwent minor operations following the Rugby League World Cup.

“Sam Tomkins for a knee issue and Mike McMeeken for a small fracture in his wrist. Both are recovering well with the team.

“Their recovery will determine their availability.”

The trio of injuries to such key players has sparked the Dragons to call up five of their youth team, the Esteve Dragons, to the first-team training squad.

All of this follows an incredibly difficult pre-season for Catalans as they only had four players to start their pre-season, whilst they’ve struggled to arrange pre-season friendlies with their fellow French side Toulouse Olympique starting their Championship campaign two weeks earlier and therefore beign unavailable.

With so many French internationals as well as the English trio of the injured Tomkins and McMeeken, plus Michael McIlorum all joining late it’s only now that McNamara has had his full squad available.

Even now with all players returned this huge injury blow to three of their biggest stars will provide a lot of trouble when they open the season up with an away date at the KCOM to face Hull FC.

The five call-ups from the reserve team are Léo Laurent, Mike Parenti, Bastien Scimone, Ugo Tison and Tanguy Zenon.

These five players, who made their Super League debut last season at Wigan, will be with the Dragons’ training squad from now on.
