England and NRL star tips surprise club for Super League glory

Elliott Whitehead of England is returning to Super League

Elliott Whitehead, joining Catalans Dragons for next season, has tipped a surprise side to win the Super League Grand Final.

We’re down to just four contenders, as we head towards the semi-final stage this week, following a thrilling pair of Super League games at the weekend.

Leigh Leopards came out on top – largely thanks to Edwin Ipape’s brilliance – against Salford Red Devils at a packed Salford Community Stadium on Friday night, with a final score of 14-6 in favour of the Leopards, who not many predicted to make it to the play-offs just a few months ago.

The next day, we had even more drama, as a replay of an eliminator clash from last year saw Warrington Wolves vs St Helens, this time at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Here, it was drop-goal drama that sealed the victory for Wire, despite a late try and conversion from Jon Bennison on the hooter.

Whitehead, coming back to Super League after almost a decade with Canberra Raiders in NRL, spoke to NRL.com at the Dally M Awards this week.

Asked who he felt would win the Grand Final, he said: “I think Hull KR,”

“I think it’s going to change, I think they’ve had a great season. I think they’re going to win.”

Hull KR have had their most successful Super League season to date, finishing second in the table, and could easily have finished top if not for sin-bins in a vital clash against Wigan Warriors.

They will face Warrington Wolves on Friday night at Craven Park, to decide who will be at Old Trafford for the big showdown.

This week, talismanic half Mikey Lewis was also named on the shortlist for the 2024 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel, and will surely be the favourite to win it if the Robins go all the way.
