England 46-6 Papua New Guinea records amazing attendance at Wigan Warriors’ DW Stadium

England have booked their place in the Rugby League semi-finals with a 46-6 win over Papua New Guinea in the Rugby League World Cup.

It was an exceptional first half from Shaun Wane’s side as they led 38-0 at the break. Their middles devastated their opponents as Tom Burgess and Victor Radley shone.

On the back of that, England kicked masterfully well in short range whilst the likes of Tommy Makinson showed their finishing power to defeat the Kumuls with ease.

Makinson crossed for five tries and kicked five goals as he scored 30 points all by himself in an amazing win for England.

Dom Young, Kallum Watkins, Tom Burgess, and George Williams also crossed for tries.

The second half was less potent from England as they made a number of errors but they continued to defend brilliantly conceding just one try.

Prior to the game, England women devastated Canada with a superb display as they edge closer to their own semi-finals.

Adding to that, the Princess of Wales met both squads and there was a brilliant gesture before the game for Movember promoting the importance of mental health.

This was all enhanced by the 23,179 fans in attendance which is a record for a rugby league world cup quarter final.

It doesn’t quite top the opener at St James’ Park which attracted 43,000 fans but it is comfortably in the top three for the tournament and pushes the attendance at Bramall Lane last week as England beat Greece 94-4 scoring 17 tries down to fourth.

It also means that the quarter-finals between them so far have attracted over 30,000 fans.
