Emotional Mikey Lewis makes Grand Final claim after Hull KR grind out win

Hull KR Super League

Hull KR star Mikey Lewis spoke after his side’s 10-8 win over Warrington Wolves as the Robins made their first-ever Grand Final.

It was an intense and emotional night at Craven Park and Lewis was one of those overcome by emotion after the game with the Man of Steel nominee holding back tears as he spoke on Sky Sports‘ coverage.

“You’re making me emotional,” he quipped to presenter Jenna Brooks as he took in the adoration of the Hull KR faithful behind him.

“I love them all. From when I was 16 when I joined this club, it wasn’t in a good place to where it is now and that’s a credit to everyone behind the scenes. I just love this team.”

Lewis did not start his rugby league career with Hull KR and was instead across the city and part of the Hull FC Academy before his release, leading to him joining the red half of the city.

He would make his 100th appearance for Rovers last night after debuting just over five years ago but few could have predicted just how influential he would become.

“We haven’t finished yet” – Hull KR star looks ahead to Grand Final

Lewis leads Super League for try contributions this season with 19 tries and 24 assists and whilst he was not involved in any last night, he played a key role primarily in unsettling Warrington who failed to click into gear until the second half.

By then Hull KR were 10-0 up and despite a Matty Ashton brace, the Robins held on to make history as they earned their first-ever Grand Final appearance, something Lewis would reflect on.

He said: “What we’ve created this year is spectacular. We haven’t finished yet, we’ve got one more game. It wasn’t the best performance from us but it’s rugby league.

“I can’t wait, I’m going to take it in all week. It’s something that you dream of as a kid. We’re not going to go there and just take part, we’re going there to win it. We’re going to have to play better than tonight though.”

The transformation under head coach Willie Peters of the team, but specifically of Lewis, has been incredible and the England international spoke to how the Australian coach has made that happen.

“He just keeps us all accountable. He keeps driving us and driving us. It’s a long year and there are sore bodies but the grit and determination of our squad is something we’re all holding on to very tightly.”

Lewis could well be crowned Man of Steel on Tuesday night before walking out at Old Trafford in a week’s time aiming to write his name into more history books.
