Elstone confirms Toronto situation

Super League Chief Executive Robert Elstone has said all options are being considered in terms of the Toronto Wolfpack.

The decision was made to defer the decision on letting them back in, as their first application fell well short of what the Super League was looking for.

He also confirmed prospective owner Carlo LiVolsi reached out for more time.

Elstone said: “The viability of the market in Toronto, and the viability of the club’s finances must be considered. Neither of those were answered in sufficient detail.

“Subsequently, Mr. LiVolsi reached out and asked for more time. I think on balance, and under consideration, it was the right thing to do.

“The reason for the demise for the club was, COVID playing a big part, and their own exceptional circumstances, which we already know. The directors have given them the chance to resubmit.

“We will also do our own work on the commercial viability of having a team in Canada. There is also an onus on them to provide that, the Super League will benefit from having a team in Toronto.

“It’s easy to look at the size and tourist attractions of Toronto. But we need to look at how big the markets are. Looking at similar sports businesses have taken those opportunities.”
