Eddie Hemmings slams suggestion that Super League needs a rebrand

The RFL have confirmed the areas in which IMG’s club grading criteria for the licencing of potential Super League clubs will focus.

However, they have also confirmed that the rebrand of the men’s and women’s Super League will be complete in time for the new season.

That stated that: “IMG sister company and cultural marketing agency 160over90 expects to complete the wider rebrand of the Men’s and Women’s Super League competitions later this year ahead of the 2024 season launch.”

What exactly this means is unclear. However there has been talk of a new name, a new trophy and an overall new feel to the competition which has had the same title and same trophy since its inception in 1996.

What name would be considered remains unclear at this moment in time.

As this discussion goes on, former Sky Sports commentator Eddie Hemmings has claimed it is a bad idea to ditch the name.

He also slammed the sport for not tying down the name which has now been used elsewhere.

He said on his podcast: “Two areas of concern for me, why are we thinking about rebranding? We were the original Super League, why didn’t we patent that name in 1996?”

Of course there is the problem now of football’s attempted European Super League and Hemmings pointed out that they were the first European Super League:

“You talk about the European Super League, we are the original European Super League. I remember in Paris in ’96 my first words ‘and the European Super League is underway.’

“Something maybe needs tinkering but please if you’ve got any influence in that council then stick with the S and the Super.”
