Eddie Hemmings says “TV companies love” Magic Weekend as he questions call to get rid of it

IMG are set to make a lot of changes to rugby league including the potential end of Magic Weekend.

However, on his podcast, former Sky Sports commentator Eddie Hemmings has said this would be a mistake:

“The other thing that bothers me personally is that this is going to be allegedly the last Magic Weekend year. Why are we chucking away a fantastic event like that?”

On this episode he was joined by Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick who wholeheartedly ahreed: “I’m going to have to agree with you Eddie and I think again this is probably up for discussion. I’m a big fan of magic, I know the players enjoy playing, certainly coaches like going up there and as do supporters.”

Hemmings then added: “Television viewers love it, television companies love it!”

This is vitally important given the sport is negotiating a new TV deal.

Fitzpatrick would go on to say:

“I think it’s fantastic, the viewing figures are strong for that weekend so yes I agree that I think we probably need to have a look at that.

“It may not be totally off the table, as I say I like it and that’s similar to the views of other clubs. I’m also aware of other clubs that are not fans of it but personally I do like it. If you look at the NRL, they’ve replicated it.”
