Drinkwater set for Headingley switch ?

Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos are interested in signing Catalans Dragons half back Josh Drinkwater to bolster their attacking options for 2019 .

The Rhinos have had a nightmare 2018 but secured their place in next years Super League with a less than impressive win at Halifax on Sunday . Catalans have surprisingly decided not to keep the 26 year old former Leigh Centurion for next season having signed Matty Smith from St Helens , which has led to dismay in some quarters as the Dragons dramatic turn of fortunes this year has coincided with Drinkwater arriving in Perpignan .

The Australian star was part of the Dragons side as they won the Challenge Cup on a historic day at Wembley last month , having joined the club from Leigh in April with the French outfit bottom of the league and seemingly on their way to a 2nd campaign in the middle 8 .

There will be a clamour for Drinkwater’s signature for 2019 but his friendship with new Leeds Coach David Furner makes the Rhinos firm favourites to acquire his services for the new season .

Leeds have had to fight for their survival in the middle 8 for the 2nd time in 3 years  and it’s hoped the likes of Drinkwater can bring some stability at Headingley as the format of the competition changes once again next year . 5 wins out of 6 has seen the Rhinos become the 1st side in the middle 8 to book their place in next seasons top flight and Leeds can put a disappointing season behind them after Friday’s game against Toronto . Will Drinkwater be able to help turn Leeds fortunes around as they seek a top 5 play off place in 2019 ?

Drinkwater was said to favour a return to the NRL but the lure of one of England’s biggest clubs could be enough to persuade him to stay in Super League .
