“Down to the bare bones” – Super League boss confirms injury to star

Huddersfield Giants suffered an embarrassing 60-10 loss at the hands of Salford Red Devils as their disappointing Super League season continued and it’s now been confirmed that they’ve lost one of their stars to injury.

Salford ran in ten tries as they dominated the Giants to solidify their own place in the Super League playoffs, leaving Huddersfield languishing in ninth and hoping for the season to come to a close.

They’ll have to finish the season without full-back Jake Connor who could be out for the season with an MCL injury, although interim boss Luke Robinson prefaced that they didn’t anticipate it to be “too severe”.

Speaking after the “embarrassing” loss, Robinson explained: “When it’s not going your way, it’s not going your way. It looks like Jake’s MCL, which I think he’s done before, he’s had knee problems in the past.

“We don’t think at this stage it’s going to be too severe, but you never know until you investigate a little bit more.”

Depending on what Connor has done to his MCL, he could be available against St Helens next week, however, a more severe Grade 2 or Grade 3 tear could sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.

The full-back came in for criticism last week with Jon Wilkin taking aim at him as he labelled Connor as “the centre of attention”, declaring that he would not want to play with him.

If Connor is sidelined then it would mark a miserable end to the season for Huddersfield who at times were down to 11 yesterday due to sin bins and HIAs as Robinson bemoaned the team’s misfortune of late.

“We seem to be dropping like flies with the head knocks, people going down left, right and centre, which are making it a little bit more challenging for us. I think last week we played a quarter of the game with 12 men this week we played a quarter of the game with 12 men and we had a green card as well so we actually had 11 men when Nene McDonald’s scored.”

After getting star centre Esan Marsters back last week, the centre missed out after withdrawing just before kick off leaving the Super League strugglers “down to the bare bones”.

“We lost (Adam) Milner just before the game, lost Esan (Marsters) just before the game so we’re sort of down to the bare bones anyway. We lost Greenie (Joe Greenwood) as well just before the game, I thought he’d be back but he needed another week so fingers crossed we do have some bodies coming back but we won’t know that until maybe next week.”
