Dom Young speaks as a Sydney Rooster for the first time aiming to become the tenth Englishman to win the NRL

Dom Young has left Newcastle Knights to join Sydney Roosters for 2024.

England star Dom Young has spoken for the first time as a Sydney Rooster, and the first time since his illness that caused him to miss England’s test series against Tonga, the winger announcing his intentions to win a Grand Final with the Tricolours.

Young had a standout season in 2023 as he broke the single-season try-scoring record for Newcastle Knights, racking up 25 tries in 25 games as the Knights went on a tear at the end of the season to make the playoffs.

After a so-so start the team won their final nine games of the regular season to earn a fifth place finish, securing a home play-off game which they won before losing to New Zealand Warriors.

Regardless it was still a great season for the club and an even better one for Young as it helped him secure the move to Sydney Roosters, his early season form seeing him land the deal mid-season and he now has linked up with his new team.

Still just 22 there’s endless possibilities for the former Huddersfield Giants man, his record of 43 tries in just 51 games for the Knights being among the best try per game rates in the NRL.

Despite the series victory he was a huge loss for England in the end-of-season internationals, Young suffering a serious sinus infection that was aggravated by the flight over and then spreading to his brain.

He’s back in full health now though and with high ambitions for his scheduled four-year stay for the Roosters, outlining a desire to lift the NRL title which would make him one of just a handful of Brits to do so.

Speaking to RoostersTV he said: “When I sat down and spoke with Robbo (coach Trent Robinson), the desire he had for the club and the plans he had for me as well was something I was really excited by.

“The Roosters are a massive club and an ambitious club as well and I think I’m an ambitious player.”

That ambition by Young was shown when he left Huddersfield after the 2020 season, aged just 19 to try and crack it in the NRL. Speaking on that desire to challenge himself, he said: “I’ve always wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and moving to Sydney was a part of that too.

“There was a few things that combined but the culture of the club, everyone is ripping in and working hard every day, they’re probably the longest days I’ve ever seen before so you definitely can’t say we’re not working hard.

“This club plays to win premierships and that’s my goal as well.”
