‘Disrespectful’ – Andrew Johns fuming about what just happened to him

rugby league

Rugby league legend Andrew Johns has reacted angrily to being snubbed by the NRL for a key decision.

Johns, who played a record 249 NRL games for Newcastle Knights (and made three Warrington Wolves appearances) is one of the best half-backs of all time.

He won the Dally M Medal (awarded to the NRL’s best player) three times and won two Premierships, as well as finishing his career as the highest points scorer in Australian first-grade rugby league history.

On top of this, he represented Australia as well as playing 23 times for New South Wales in State of Origin.

Since retiring, he’s been at the centre of plenty of controversy – including over ecstasy use on the London Underground, before he revealed that he used it regularly even when playing.

He was also fired from his role as NSW assistant coach over reports that he used racist language when referring to Greg Inglis.

He’s a National Rugby League Hall of Famer – and one of three ‘Immortals’ – the highest level, alongside Mal Meninga and Wally Lewis.

Tonight, a fourth Immortal will be indicted – with suggestions that it could be Cameron Smith or Ron Coote.

However, Andrew Johns has revealed that he wasn’t consulted about the newest inductee – and neither were Meninga or Lewis.

The system for voting has been recently changed, with a panel of 14-people, mostly journalists, make the decision by casting votes.

Via Nine, Johns said: “It’s disrespectful. I haven’t had a phone call. As of Monday, I didn’t know there was going to be another Immortal being inducted. I thought it was just Hall of Fame.”

Continuing, talking about who was asked to vote, he said: “Not myself, not Wally, not Mal. I know they’re disappointed.

“I’ll be up on stage for the announcement of the Immortal but I didn’t even know there was going to be another Immortal inducted on Wednesday night.”
