Dewsbury announce centre retirement

Dewsbury Rams have confirmed Joe Wardill has again been forced to retire from the game of rugby league at the age of 23.

Wardill came through the academy at Hull KR, and made 17 appearances, scoring five tries. He was part of the side that was relegated, and then won promotion to the Super League.

However, in 2019, he announced his retirement at the age of just 21 after needing three hip operations in three years. After that, he became assistant coach of the Women’s team at Hull KR.

However, a year later, he came out of retirement to play for Dewsbury Rams. However, he never got to make an appearance for the Rams, after the 2020 season was voided.

Head coach Lee Greenwood told the club website: “It’s a real shame for Joe and us. He came into pre-season pain free and was looking good in training but over the last couple months his hip problems have resurfaced.

“I’m sure we could have managed him in order to play the odd game but we need to think about his health and wellbeing going forward.

“As sad as it is for him, he has made the right decision and this will allow him to concentrate on his study and work without the worry of not being able to walk properly or get out of bed.”
