Derek Beaumont suggests bold new name for Super League

As IMG revealed their grading criteria last Thursday there was something that went unnoticed.

RL Commercial confirmed that a rebrand of Super League could be complete for the 2024 season.

In the statement concerning IMG, they said:

“IMG sister company and cultural marketing agency 160over90 expects to complete the wider rebrand of the Men’s and Women’s Super League competitions later this year ahead of the 2024 season launch.”

What exactly this means is unclear. However there has been talk of a new name, a new trophy and an overall new feel to the competition which has had the same title and same trophy since its inception in 1996.

What name would be considered remains unclear at this moment in time.

Following this former Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, Warrington Wolves, St Helens, Hull KR and Castleford Tigers star Nick Fozzard has proposed a radical new naming idea.

It is an idea that links towards the NRL and of course American sports like the NFL and NBA.

He said on Twitter: “Can we drop the name super League – and instead be know as The “RFL” the rugby football league That’s who we are Super league doesn’t mean anything and there are that many different super leagues in sport RFL Grand Final – for example.”

In response to this, Leigh Leopards owner, who is no stranger to renaming things having rebrand Leigh Centurions as the Leopards to huge success, then gave his thoughts.

He said he thought the name RFL proposed by Fozzard was boring and wanted something like “ultimate rugby.”

He said:

“I like ultimate rugby we need to market the sport different and I agree a name change and re brand are needed to deliver that. Personally think RFL is boring and hard to market! Ultimate rugby.”

RFL is the name of the governing body ffs. They run multiple competitions not just Super League. It’s the equivalent of renaming the Premier League “The FA”. And using Australia’s NRL as an example is bs because that’s National Rugby League which is run by the ARL. So, is the solution the RFL RFL? No. Add RFL into Super League to become the RFL Super League, like with the Championship and League 1, but not just RFL.

And as for “Ultimate Rugby” it sounds like it was created by a child and does not fit a national league.
