Derek Beaumont serves ‘humble pie’ to Sky Sports after Leigh Leopards secure play-offs

Leigh Leopards secured their Super League play-off status with an 18-12 win over St Helens but owner Derek Beaumont has had the final say.

After a terrible start to the season where they won just one of their opening seven games, the Leopards finished the season off with ten wins from twelve to secure a fifth-place finish in improbable circumstances.

It was a win in front of a packed-out Leigh Sports Village and there were few people celebrating the win more than Leopards owner Derek Beaumont who celebrated in front of the Sky Sports cameras and insisted that he was serving the broadcasters ‘humble pie’.

As Jenna Brooks set about interviewing the Man of the Match Edwin Ipape, the Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont stormed the interview and offered Brooks a pie with icing that read ‘Humble’.

“There’s some humble pie for all of you at Sky Sports,” he declared as he handed a confused Brooks the pie.

When asked to clarify what he meant, Beaumont explained: “You lot on Sky motivated us from Round One when you picked a team that made the play-offs last year to not make the play-offs this year.

“You picked us to drop out and you picked Leeds to make the play-offs so there’s your humble pie.”

Victory for Leigh came at the same time as Leeds Rhinos lost 26-16 to Hull KR meaning that the Rhinos finish outside the top six for the second season in a row.

As for Leigh, they will travel to face Salford Red Devils in a weeks time with the Leopards making the play-offs for two consecutive seasons after their promotion to Super League.

Beaumont’s explosive interview marks his second outburst of the day after he had earlier clapped back at a Hull FC fan on social media over the Black and Whites deserving to be relegated should they finish bottom of the table.
