Derek Beaumont reveals surprise name as his ‘best ever signing’ for Leigh Leopards

Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont has revealed his best ever signing and discussed the player ‘that got away’ during his time in charge of the club.

Speaking on the club’s YouTube channel, he answered questions from fans on social media.

He revealed a huge name that they could have signed: “Jarryd Hayne, the one that got away, that I was really looking forward to.

“Oh man, it was done, when he’d come back from American football, everything was done.

“Then there was basically a wedding on a date, literally as the contract was to come through that morning. So that was the one that got away.”

Hayne, after being one of the biggest names in the sport, winning individual awards, tried unsuccessfully to get a career in NFL, being waived by the 49ers.

He also tried to make his way to the 2016 Olympic Games in sevens, but wasn’t picked.

He’s now in prison after being found guilty of rape.

Speaking on his best signing, he continued: “The one that I had to pinch myself on, you know, actually I was talking to the guy yesterday.

“It’s the one that really was the kind of catalyst here and that was Fuifui Moimoi because back when we did that, it was probably a minimum of three and a half times the salary of our highest paid player, part-time in the Championship, a player of his calibre.

“He was just phenomenal and nobody could believe he’d come to Championship and not Super League.

“Probably the most unique thing about it was it never got leaked. It’s probably the only signing we’ve done where it’s never been leaked, it was locked in my drawer.”

“So it was good to see him yesterday and that he’s still over here. I told him at the time when we signed him he would be. What a great player. There has been many but that’s the one I’d single out.”

Moimoi signed for Leigh ahead of the 2015 season after over ten years and 200 games for NRL side Parramatta Eels.

When the side were promoted to Super League, he signed for Toronto Wolfpack, who were in RFL League One at the time.
